Three study paths, and the costs that travel with them
Tuition is only one line. A campus in the province, a room in Hat Yai, and a private college do not ask the same things of a household.
When a student reaches Mathayom 5, families in this province often have three shapes of cost in the same conversation: stay near home, go to a campus that needs a room, or pay a private college. The tuition lines can look surprisingly close. The other lines do not.
Staying in the province, for example at Princess of Naradhiwas University, can mean the student still eats at the family table. The household pays tuition and daily transport, and it does not suddenly pay for a room, a fan, a deposit, and a bus home at the end of term. That path is often the one a shopkeeping family can hold without stopping the younger child's school van.
A campus further away, such as Prince of Songkla in Hat Yai, adds a year of lodging and travel even when the faculty fee looks familiar. We have sat with families who compared tuition only, decided the distant campus was 'about the same,' and then met the room deposit in the same month as the younger child's May invoice. The University Cost Briefing exists so those two months are visible before anyone accepts a place.
Private college is a third shape. The invoice is clearer and usually heavier. There may be fewer years, or a different entrance path. It can be the right path when the household wants a known bill more than a lower bill. It is a poor surprise when it was chosen because a relative said the government university was 'too hard to get into' and nobody priced either option.
None of these paths is a moral ranking. A family that wants a particular faculty in Hat Yai may decide the room is worth it and cut a different cost. The planning work is to put the room on the same page as the faculty, in baht, for a year.
Study outside Thailand is a different conversation again: currency, flights, and a living cost we will not invent from a brochure. That comparison is quoted as part of a full Family Education Savings Plan, not slipped into a one-sitting briefing.
If your student is still in Prathom, you do not need this page's level of detail yet. You need a fee calendar and a set-aside that can survive an ordinary year. Name the three paths when the student is close enough that the names are real.
